Band keratopathy after ocular exposure to visible laser radiation.

Band keratopathy is a degenerative condi­ tion of the superficial cornea characterized by the deposition of calcium salts in its ex­ posed interpalpebral portion. The pathogenesis of the lesion is not clear, although multi­ ple etiologic factors have been determined. The association of band keratopathy with abnormalities of calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D metabolism, and with chronic intraocular inflammation is well known, but there is no explanation for either the inter­ palpebral location of the lesion or for its su­ perficial location. We devised a simple, experimental method for producing band keratopathy in normal rabbits.
